IDOLS OF THE TRIBE

Pencil on buff card

540 x 540

The 16th century philosopher Francis Bacon warned of corruption of the mind by four 'idols'; the Idols of the Tribe; the Idols of the Cave; the Idols of the Marketplace and the Idols of the Theatre.  The 'window' of this drawing is the hexagon.  The grid within is made of the idealised human form stacked in curved terraces.  The form is revealed by tonal contrast as the content of each human shape changes vertically from light to dark and from mechanical to biological.  Accepted for Royal Academy Summer Show, London.
